Chapter Thirteen
Robert welcomed the blast of cooler air that hit him in the face when he and Callie stepped onto the sidewalk. Heâd expected to be dining alone when he decided to try the best restaurant in town but was thrilled when he ran into Callie in the foyer. Heâd taken a chance when he asked her to join him and had held his breath until she acceptedâhe hadnât realized how much he wanted her to say yes until he was faced with the possibility that she wouldnât.
What she didnât know was that he had considered calling her and asking her out tonight anyway. He should have, especially after last weekend at the festival. But sheâd accepted his impromptu invitation, so the end result was the same.
They talked and laughed through dinner, and it was one of the more enjoyable meals heâd ever had with a woman.
But then, innocently enough, heâd reached over to clean a spot of marinara off her lip. He knew she wouldnât want to walk through the restaurant with sauce on her face. But when his finger touched her lips, an intimate tingle traveled through him and nailed him in the gut. And if he wasnât mistaken, Callie felt it, too.
Robert grasped her hand and threaded his fingers through hers. No pretense of hands brushing, no accidental contact. Her gaze dropped to their joined hands, and then locked on his. She squeezed his hand and smiled.

Whoa! Since when was the city too loud?
When heâd first accepted the position in Sanders Corner, heâd been concerned that he wouldnât be able to think when it was so quiet, but that was far from the case. Heâd painted himself a picture of small-town living that was far from the reality. Or maybe it was just him changing, adapting to living in Sanders Corner after so many years in the city.
After heâd talked to his parents and better understood how they felt, heâd begun unpacking the baggage that he had been carting around about small towns and realized he was happier than he ever thought he would be.
Part of that had to be attributed to the beautiful woman walking beside him.
As they strolled the sidewalks of Main Street, a couple approached from the other direction.
âGood evening, Mr. Collins, Mrs. Collins.â Callieâs smile was genuine as she greeted the couple, but she kept her fingers firmly intertwined with his. He took that as a good signâthat she wasnât trying to hide her feelings from the town.
âHello to you, too, Dr. Parker. And Dr. Jameson. Itâs so nice to see you two out tonight,â Mrs. Collins said.
Robert couldnât mistake the omitted âtogetherâ at the end of her sentence. He didnât need
